Welcome to my home page

I am a member of the Chaire de statistique of Professor Anthony Davison in the Institut de mathématiques at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). I received my Ph. D. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley, working on statistical problems in genetic linkage analysis under the direction of Professor Terry Speed.

My research is centered on solving methodological problems arising during investigations motivated by biological questions. Such investigations may utilize a variety of technologies and typically generate large, very high-dimensional data sets requiring specialized analysis. In Switzerland, I have collaborated with scientists at EPFL and ETHZ, Institut Suisse de Recherche Expérimentale sur le Cancer (ISREC), the University of Bern, and the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded National Centers for Competence in Research (NCCRs) in Molecular Oncology and Plant Survival. I am also involved in several international collaborative research projects, including gene expression and comparative genomics in Huntington's disease, gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana, microarray quality assessment, and Bayesian and machine learning methods for integrating molecular data.

My teaching spans a wide range of statistical and bioinformatics methods, including general probability and statistics, data analysis software and programming, linear and nonlinear modeling, modern regression methods (robust regression, smoothing), experimental design and analysis, multivariate and high-dimensional data analysis, statistical/machine learning theory and practice, classification and clustering algorithms, Bayesian statistics, computer-intensive methods (resampling, bootstrapping, cross-validation), genetic epidemiology, and analysis of genetic and genomic data. I taught at UCLA before moving to Switzerland in 2001. Since moving here I have taught courses at EPFL, the University of Lausanne, for students of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, and for students and scientists in the NCCRs in Molecular Oncology and Plant Survival.

I was an organizer for the Statistics in Functional Genomics workshop, held in Ascona in 2004. In response to popular demand, we hope to have a follow-up workshop in 2007. Details will be posted when I know more.

I also carry out statistical and bioinformatics consulting for individuals and companies. Please feel free to contact me by email to discuss your needs.
